Our Constitution is in trouble
In 2020, Sir Keir Starmer appointed Gordon Brown to lead a commission on the UK’s future. This commission released its report in December 2022.
The report recommends the most radical and dangerous reforms to the constitution ever undertaken. It would change our political system beyond recognition.
Among its recommendations are the creation of constitutionally enshrined social rights, a radical extension of devolution, and the complete abolition of the House of Lords.
Parliamentary sovereignty and political stability—two principles that have characterized our constitution for centuries—would be instantly dead in the water.
Now, Labour is in power, and their constitutional vandalism is in full swing. Already, the government is passing legislation to remove hereditary peers from the House of Lords.
Hereditary peers are among the most staunchly committed members of the Lords. They are the only members of that House who are impervious to the pressures of partisan politics and the possibility of partisan political patronage.
This is nothing more than a power grab designed to expel opposition legislators.
We’ve been here before: it was New Labour that carried out the first wave of constitutional vandalism, including the Human Rights Act and the creation of the Supreme Court.
These reforms have not been a success: they have prevented the deportation of dangerous foreign criminals, made the judiciary political, and undermined parliamentary sovereignty.
We support not just the conservation of the British constitution as it stands, but also its restoration to its previous form.
